Laura Macken Dance presents
Timepieces

Laura Macken will be taking residency during the month of November with Dance Ireland to rework two pieces that she created in 2018 and 2019 through Arts Council project funding. This residency will culminate in two performances at the Project Arts Centre on November 15th and 16th both at 6pm, through the kind support of the Arts Council and John Scott who will be performing his work Devine Madness during that week.

The first piece Connections was first created in July 2018 where Laura presented this, her first neoclassical work here at DanceHouse. This project was supported by the AC funding, and through residencies with Shawbrook Dance and Dance Ireland. The project was mentored by choreographer Marguerite Donlon and was performed by seven Irish and international dancers. The theme of the piece focused on the various ways in which we find connection in our everyday lives. The important connection to self, how we connect to others and the different levels of those relationships were explored. The theme of how ballet connects back to its historical roots in early court dance was also a reoccurring theme throughout the piece. Five pieces of music by Bach provided a beautiful partnership to the classically influenced choreography.

In July 2019, with the support of AC funding and through residencies at the Fringe Lab, and St Catherine’s Community Sports Centre, Laura presented her second work Lift. The piece was an exploration of the daily cyclical rhythms in which we find ourselves and looks at how we are influenced by the patterns and rhythms of others. Both the positive and negative outcomes of these influences, and how to live at our own individual rhythm and pace are explored in this piece. Also danced by seven Irish and international dancers this piece was performed at St Catherine’s Sports and Community centre in July.

Laura Macken Dance wishes to thanks the Arts Council, Dance Ireland and John Scott Dance for the opportunity to bring these pieces back again and see them performed at the Project space upstairs on Nov 15th and 16th at 6pm both days.
